The Samsung SGH i780 is a Windows Mobile Professional touch screen device with a front facing Qwerty keyboard and a square screen. The major difference with this and other square screen devices is the screen resolution. All previous square screen devices we have seen followed the 240 x 240 resolution but this phone has a 320 x 320 display which makes for a much better viewing experience.

The Samsung i780 is a solid device, though larger, wider, and heavier than the Samsung i600. The Samsung i780’s larger form factor is understandable since it houses a larger screen. The screen on this device is touch sensitive, has 65k colors and is one of the first devices I’ve seen that has a 320 x 320 screen resolution. The Samsung i780 is not made from cheap plastic materials, the back cover alone has a somewhat leathery look and feel to it.

Many of the buttons on the i780 perform two functions. For example, long-pressing the spacebar toggles the silent mode, while the hang-up button keylocks the device. While common in mobile phones, other PDA-phone manufacturers should take a page out of Samsung’s book to include more such features. This can only make their devices more user-friendly. One quirk–the keylock does not affect the volume control, so it’s possible for you to accidentally bring the phone out of silent mode, which could be embarrassing in a meeting. Let’s hope Samsung fixes this bug in an update.

The SGH-i780 is a 3G handset with HSDPA support and it also has both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built in. There is a front-facing camera for video calling and a 2-megapixel camera on the back for shooting stills and video. There is a microSD card on the right-hand edge of the casing and you can use this to add to the built-in memory.

The screen is a bit dinky too. With all those data viewing possibilities on offer – the Web being perhaps the most significant of all - it is a pity that the screen measures just 2.5 inches across diagonal corners and offers 320 x 320 pixels. If you are used to a screen taller than it is wide, then this square format may take a while to get used to and require more vertical scrolling than you are accustomed to as well.
