Samsung is keeping itself busy and has announced new handsets at the Singapore Telecommunications Exhibition. The 3G, J800 Luxe slider is the first one on the block. It is a mid-range phone with a 2.2-inch 176 x 200 display, two-megapixel camera, FM tuner, A2DP support, and a slot for microSD cards. Next is the L700, a decent candybar with a 2.1-inch screen, HSDPA, a choice of colors (pink, silver, and gold), and similar features as the previous phone. The Symbian-based L870 is different from the rest, that the company claims is still on target for its August release. No word on pricing or release dates for the two new models, however.

The connectivity side passes the test with WiFi of 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. The long-rumored GPS is indeed included, which is fast becoming a standard on high-end smartphones. Another interesting feature is an optical mouse, although no details are available on its utility. The 2.55-inch touchscreen display boasts a resolution of 320×320 pixels.

Sprint today made the surprise announcement that the Samsung Instinct will sell for $130 on its June 20th launch date. The two-year contract price comes just over a week following the introduction of the rival iPhone 3G and significantly undercuts both the Apple device as well as an internal memo at the carrier which had suggested the same $199 subsidized price as for the iPhone. Sprint’s price notably comes after an unusually steep $100 mail-in rebate and points to a more expensive price for the touchscreen phone outside of the deal.
The Instinct is regarded as Apple’s most direct competition for its July 11th iPhone 3G launch and now matches some features closely, including 3G Internet access up to 1.4Mbps downstream as well as true GPS, Visual Voicemail, and a 2-megapixel camera. The Instinct however drops Apple’s 8GB of built-in storage in favor of a microSDHC card slot while adding voice commands, audio MMS, and access to services such as Sprint’s Internet TV feeds.

Samsung will unveil its much rumored Omnia SmartPhone at the CommunicAsia, Singapore tomorrow. Heated debates have already started on the Internet, comparing Apple’s latest iPhone with this latest Samsung model. Judging from the published specs, the built-in 5Mp digital camera seems to be a step up from the 2Mp iPhone camera and offers extra features including auto-focus, face and smile detection and auto-panorama shot. The Omnia will be launched in Southeast Asia this week, and in the European market from July…

Samsung announced that its Z400 clamshell phone will be the first Samsung push to talk phone on the sprint Nextel network. The device offers military grade ruggedness, sprint Mobile broadband, hands-free capability, GPS, and messaging.
The Z400 is dust, shock, and vibration resistant. The Z400 will be a Sprint exclusive handset. Other features of the device include a 1.3 MP camera with 2x digital zoom and it can record video clips as well. The Z400 is available now in select markets at $99.99 with a 2-year contract and $50 mail-in rebate.
The Z400 measures 3.7” x 1.9” x 0.96” and weighs 3.5 ounces. DC permissions on the device allow the blocking of incoming PTT calls and call alerts and the phone can send SMS text messages. The blue housing of the phone is also rubberized for better grip and protection against scratches.

Samsung today announced the Omnia, a high-end smartphone that combines Windows Mobile 6.1 with Samsung’s TouchWiz finger-touch interface. The Omnia supports quad-band GSM/EDGE, plus HSDPA 7.2 for Europe and Asia. Key features include a 3.2-inch wide touch display, GPS, stereo Bluetooth, WiFi, and up to 16 GB of internal memory plus a memory card slot. A 5-megapixel camera is also included, and sports auto-focus, geo-tagging, auto-panorama, stabilizer, face detection, smile detection, and video editing. FM radio and auto-rotation round out the features packed into the 12.5mm body. The Omnia will be available in Asia starting in June, followed by Europe in July. The Omnia’s model number is SGH-i900; an SGH-i907 (with the “7″ implying an AT&T model) was recently approved by the FCC.

Don’t let the prospect of an even-better iPhone get you down, Sprint subscribers. The Samsung Instinct is coming on June 20, giving you an iPhone clone all your own, and it’ll likely be a pretty good one once the bugs are worked out. I hate comparing other devices to the iPhone, but the Instinct is basically Samsung’s reinvention of the iPhone idea: a slick-looking, touch-driven, multimedia handheld that brings a lot of non-phone features to the front, without being a full-fledged smartphone. (Yes, I realize the iPhone is now a bona fide smartphone.) And, you know what? It’s not bad, mostly because of its excellent touch screen, which is accurate and instinctive, and a far cry from the frustrating experience you get with the Samsung Glyde. Maybe this slightly boxy phone doesn’t have all the sex appeal of Apple’s phone, but it’s pretty snazzy in its own right, and has enough pluses to satisfy those who can’t part with their Sprint Simply Everything plan.

Sprint has announced that the Samsung SCH-M800 Instinct will be available for purchase starting on June 20th. The Instinct is a full-touch cell phone in the style of the Apple iPhone. It features built-in GPS capabilities, and very speedy EV-DO Rev A 3G data for fast downloads and uploads alike.
We had a chance to play with the Instinct at the device’s launch event at the 2008 CTIA show in Las Vegas. Check out that story for live video and mobileburn hands-on impressions of the Instinct.

Last month we all got a nice taste of Samsung leak love when some initial details about the L870 made the rounds. To refresh your memory, it looks hot. A Symbian slider running the latest version of S60 with a metal face, 3 megapixel camera and a quad band GSM radio (or so we thought). We also knew that this puppy was going to be nice and fit, sporting dimensions of 102 × 50 x 13.55 mm. Now it’s looking like the L870 will also be home to an interactive directional pad, a front-facing secondary camera and some more goodies although the quad band radio looks like it will now be tri band alongside 2100 UMTS. Some more specs:
- Tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900), 2100 UMTS, 3.6Mbs HSDPA connectivity
- Symbian 9.3 S60 3.2 OS
- 2.3″ 260K color QVGA 240 × 320 pixel display
- 3 megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera for video calls
- FM radio with RDS
- USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 2.0
- microSDHC support
Typical Samsung. Take the juicy handsets and make sure that GSM 850 and US-compatible UMTS is omitted. Other regions can expect to see this Soul-like smartphone announced next month at Communic Asia or even sooner. For the rest of us here in the US it looks like it pretty much doesn’t matter anymore.
