The $200 million Water Cube structure constructed by PTW Architects and Arup has now become an iconic structure after the spectacular Beijing Olympics, and not to forget that it is the same place where Michael Phelps swam for his gold. Obviously banking on its success -as a Chinese design accomplishment, and now a world wide recognizable structure- has lead to the development of a new phone called ‘The 2008 Olympics Water Cube Phone’. This is an original Chinese phone, not a clone like the numerous iPhone and Nokia clones that China is so famous in producing. It will be available in 6 different colors and it’s got TV, Bluetooth and Tri-Band GSM.

For those still thinking that flexible displays are far from being widely accessible, think again. E Ink has just announced that its Vizplex Imaging Film-based displays will be used in handsets by Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications. For starters, the Hitachi W61H (already available) boasts a 2.7-inch E Ink display that can scroll through 96 different images whenever a call is received or the clamshell is cracked open; the Casio G’zOne (shown after the jump) will feature the same technology on its secondary "silhouette display." Details beyond that are pretty scant, but the real news here is that these displays are finally making their way into reasonably affordable handsets.

This is the Samsung i740, which got an official press release in Kiev last week. Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 (Pro) it’s a tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900) touch-screen device with a auto-focus 3 megapixel camera and flash.
The device also has GPS and an optical joystick for phone navigation with a microSD card slot for added storage. Inside is a 150mAh battery and FM radio, although there’s a distinct lack of 3G or WiFi connectivity, turning this into a handset which will provide a rather slow browsing / email experience. Still, you at least get a business card reader and a 240×320 screen and the sat-nav capability.
Expect to see this in shops across the Ulkraine in August for around $1949 (woah!) There’s no word as yet on whether this will appear elsewhere.

France Telecom’s Orange is to launch a disposable (or in French, “jetable”, which we quite like) mobile phone to be sold in tabacs (newsagent-type shops), convenience stores and supermarkets.
Orange has team up with not only Alcatel, the phone’s manufacturer, but BIC, infamous for throwaway razors, lighters and cheap biros, whose branding will appear on the phone.
The prepay phone will be sold with 60-minute’s worth of credit, that will remain valid for two months after purchase, and will be offered ready-charged and connected, so consumers can just open the pack and make a call straight away.
The basic handset will cost French consumers 49 euros including taxes, and the phone’s number, which is included in the pack, is valid for at least 12 months from the time the phone is activated.

Money is no object for some. For the rest of us who aren’t loaded with cash or living off daddy, money can be quite the issue and often means we can’t treat ourselves to those must-have gadgets. The emergency charger, whether solar powered or not is a useful gadget to have lying around in the pit of your bag, as it’s more than likely that one day you’ll really *really* need it.
