Thanks to the Cingular 8525’s UMTS/HSDPA backbone, Cingular business and consumer users have the ability to perform voice and data functions simultaneously when using the device. For example, Cingular customers can use the device as a wireless broadband modem tethered to their PC to download e- mail or other information, or surf the Web and simultaneously make or receive a mobile phone call. No other 3G wireless provider in the U.S. can provide that capability.

The Cingular 8525’s value extends beyond work activities. During a break in the day or after business hours, users can relax by listening to their favorite music on Windows Media Player 10 Mobile using wired or Bluetooth- enabled stereo headsets, or enjoy video clips courtesy of MobiTV. The Cingular 8525 also comes equipped with a 2-megapixel digital camera and video recorder for sharper photos and video.** With an optional 1GB Micro-SD card, customers can store about 250 songs, more than 1,000 games or over 2,000 standard resolution photos.

The Cingular 8525 Pocket PC is the perfect wireless device for the power business user both during work-time and downtime. Corporate users can have their company e-mail pushed to their Pocket PC in real-time with Microsoft Direct Push or Good Mobile Messaging wireless e-mail solutions. Thanks to the combination of BroadbandConnect and Windows Mobile 5.0, they can quickly open and edit large Word and Excel documents and view PowerPoint, PDF and photo attachments. People can also get their personal e-mail pushed to the device using the popular Cingular Xpress Mail service. The Cingular 8525’s QWERTY, backlit “slider” keyboard makes creating or replying to a message an easy experience.

“The Cingular 8525 Pocket PC breaks new ground in wireless broadband connectivity in North America,” said Kent Mathy, president Cingular Wireless’ B2B organization, the Business Markets Group. “Not only is the Cingular 8525 the first UMTS/HSDPA-enabled PDA to launch on the continent, it is the only PDA or Smartphone on the American market today to give users wireless 3G capabilities both in the U.S. and in dozens of countries abroad. That translates into a tremendous advantage for the business customer in this global economy.”

Adding to the Cingular 8525’s power is support of the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system. This gives Cingular 8525 users access to mobile versions of many of the familiar Microsoft features found on their desktops, such as mobile versions of Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer and Outlook. Users can easily move through the Windows Mobile 5.0 environment thanks the Cingular 8525’s multiple device navigation capabilities — a new scroll-wheel feature, four-way navigation button and touch-screen stylus.

BroadbandConnect provides average downlink data speeds between 400-700Kbps (kilobits per second) with bursts to more than a Mbps (megabit per second) and uplink speeds to 384Kbps. When traveling outside the BroadbandConnect coverage area, the Cingular 8525 seamlessly enables service on Cingular’s EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) network, available in more than 13,000 cities and towns and in areas along more than 40,000 miles of highways.

The 2-megapixel camera took very good photos in our tests, delivering accurate color and sharp detail. Sharing shots is simple; just click or tap on the envelope icon and you can send images via e-mail or MMS. The 8525 can also capture videos at up to 352 x 288 pixels, which we viewed using WMP 10 Mobile. At full-screen we could see some artifacts, but the results are certainly good enough for grabbing quick footage.

Call quality has also been improved noticeably, with increased clarity and less static. The battery’s five-hour talk time is on a par with similar devices, as is the 220-hour standby time. In practice, we found the battery to perform close to these rated figures, though significant Wi-Fi and HSDPA data use dropped our talk time down to 3.5 to 4 hours.

Cingular 8525 Review

tn_8825.jpg

The Cingular 8525 is based on the HTC’s Hermes design, which means the smartphone looks a lot like lot like its predecessor, the 8125, but with some important differences.

As with the 8125, the new Pocket PC Phone is used in a portrait orientation as a phone or traditional PDA. A now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t QWERTY thumb-keyboard slides out from the side of the unit, switching the device to landscape mode, however.

Unlike European editions of the Hermes Pocket PC Phone, Cingular’s won’t feature a second front facing camera. So self portraits and video calling will be out of the question. Its single camera, a 2-megapixel type, resides on the back of the unit. Cingular will ship a version of the smartphone, the 8500, without any shooter at all.

There’s a 400 MHz processor that doubles the speed of the CPU in the 8125, 128 MB of ROM, and 64 MB of RAM, in addition to a QVGA touch-screen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and microSD slot.

The Cingular 8525 gives customers access to a variety of corporate data and applications — and personal e-mail and a wide range of entertainment capabilities — at wireless broadband speeds on a popular form factor. Adding to the power of the Cingular 8525 is its operating system — Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 with Direct Push Technology — which allows users to retrieve their information in the familiar environment found on most desktop computers.

The 8525 will use the same general form-factor as the current model, which means it will have a landscape orientation, with a QWERTY keyboard located on a slider so it can be hidden behind the QVGA touchscreen.

Supposedly, the primary difference between this model and its predecessor will be the inclusion of HSDPA high-speed wireless networking, giving users data transfer speeds between 400 and 700 kilobits per second.

This phone is connected to the UMTS/HSDPA Broadband Connect service, which is currently expanding both nationally and internationally. This Broadband Connect is capable of downlink speeds of 400-700 Kbps (kilobits per second) and faster. The 8525 PC phone is also able to work seamlessly with Cingular’s famous EDGE network. Wi-Fi (802.11 b and g) and calling isn’t the only thing that the PC Phone is compatible with. This PC Phone is also built to handle Bluetooth devices, as well as infrared.

Cingular 3125 Review

tn_3125-1.jpgtn_3125-2.jpg

The Cingular 3125 appeals to the heart, not the brain. It’s a great-looking flip phone that feels solid in the hand, plays MP3s, and syncs easily with Microsoft Outlook. Its design is so compelling that I’m willing to overlook its lackluster smartphone performance.

The 3.8-ounce 3125 is the most striking smartphone ever. It’s a long (3.9 by 2.1 by 0.7 inches) black flip phone with tapered ends and a very solid feel to its slim, grooved metal case. The grooves help the case repel fingerprints. The circular OLED display on the outside lights up elegantly, not aggressively, with an analog clock, caller ID, or an e-mail alert; it also works as a camera viewfinder. Flip open the phone to find an extremely handsome keypad made of one long piece of metal with large, flat keys; raised borders make it relatively easy to tell the keys apart.

Cingular 3125 Features

* Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 software for Smartphone for compatibility with Windows Mobile applications and designed to match and transpose the Outlook desktop experience
* Built-in 1.3-megapixel with video recording and playback capabilities
* Integrated MP3 audio player via Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 and MP3 ringtone support
* Conference calling with integrated hands-free speakerphone
* Enhanced T9 predictive text for messaging via Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), MSN Messenger, and email (POP3, IMAP4, SMTP)
* Personal Information Management (PIM) features including Microsoft Outlook, Contacts, and To-Do List
* Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free connectivity and infrared port for synchronization
* WAP 2.0 compliant Pocket Internet Explorer browser with EDGE technology for high-speed data transmission
* 64.0 MB of internal memory and microSD memory expansion slot for additional storage with optional card
* PC synchronization via ActiveSync

Smart phones have come a long way in terms of design and form factor. You’re no longer restricted to carrying around bricks for phones and instead have a choice of sleek, sexy numbers like the Motorola Q, the T-Mobile SDA, and the RIM BlackBerry Pearl. Yet, smart phones are limited in that they all sport a candy-bar-style form factor–that is, until now. Today, Cingular announced at the CTIA 2006 fall show the immediate availability of the Cingular 3125 (a.k.a. HTC StarTrek), the first Windows Mobile 5 smart phone to rock a sleek clamshell design.

As the first flip-phone with Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Edition packed inside, the Cingular 3125 handles a wide variety of messaging functions, including direct-push e-mail via Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino servers. Hotmail, IMAP and POP are all supported as well, and setup is fairly easy. Keys on the 3125 are cut into a single metal sheet, like the keys on Motorola’s RAZR, but are far enough apart for precision pecking.

Hearing that the Cingular 3125 only has a 200mhz TI OMAP 850 processor, a lot of people shun the processor not expecting to see any pep in its step. This is simply not the case here, the 3125 performed well as long as proper care was take to stop all running files. Using the task manager, you can stop all programs running by selecting the file and stop or by stopping all. I can image already that someone is going to run programs and never stop them and eventually the speed will become unbearable and they are going to slam this device. Stop programs, uninstall apps you don’t use, and turn the device on/off a couple times a week to keep cache and available memory under control.
