The first phone to use Windows Media Player 10, the Audiovox SMT 5600 is a hands-down crowdpleaser for both consumers and businesspeople alike. It packs in excellent Outlook syncing capabilities and provides the best multimedia experience we’ve seen on a phone. Add to that a fine design and excellent battery life, and we had no choice but name it our latest Editors’ Choice for smart phones.
Released for Cingular / AT&T Wireless, the Audiovox SMT5600 allows consumers access to productive Microsoft Office and Outlook features.
With the latest in personal information management (PIM) functionality, such as over-the-air access to Outlook Calendar, Inbox, and Contacts, users can easily transfer their most important information to their smartphone, as well as receiving access to corporate e-mail through Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and third-party middleware providers.
The Audiovox SMT5600’s phone book is limited only by the available memory (an additional 250 names can be stored on the SIM card). Each contact stores multiple fields, such as 11 phone numbers, three e-mail addresses, three street addresses, and other personal information. You can also pair contacts with a polyphonic ring tone for caller ID. Other features include a vibrate mode, a voice recorder, a calendar, a calculator, a task list, text and multimedia messaging, MSN Messenger, Bluetooth, an infrared port, a WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser, and a speakerphone. Though the handset has a MiniSD expansion slot, it limits you to 256MB of data (it also has 32MB of memory built in). While this is fine for a standalone PDA, you’ll quickly max it out with audio and video files. And the slot is tucked behind the battery, so it’s a pain to get to.

Common wisdom states that a jack-of-all-trades tends to be a master of none. With this in mind, we expected the Audiovox SMT5600 to be able to do a lot of things–just none of them too well. But after spending some serious time with this Windows Mobile 2003 smart phone, we’re terribly impressed. Not only is the GSM SMT5600 a great PDA, but it’s also a great cell phone and multimedia device. Road warriors will love being able to access e-mail, the wireless Web, and PIM data on the go, while the more gadget-oriented will welcome the SMT5600’s ability to seamlessly integrate with Windows Media Player (WMP) 10.0 for synchronizing multimedia data such as songs, pictures, video, and recorded television.

Connection ports and soft keys are located around the edges of the device, with an infrared port and on / off button located on top, USB / charger outlet and stereo 2.5mm headset jack on the bottom, volume side keys along the left, and a quick access camera button to the right.
Out of the box, the Audiovox SMT5600 comes with a standard 1050 mAh Li-Ion battery, mini-USB cable, AC adapter, stereo headset, carrying case, and a companion software CD including Microsoft Outlook 2002, Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1, SMT5600 configuration tools, and a soft copy of the user manual.

Despite its small size and relatively reasonable price tag, this smartphone has it all: the latest OS, Bluetooth, a VGA camera, good battery life and a fast 200MHz processor. It comes with ActiveSync and Outlook for Windows, a stereo earbud headset and horizontal case with belt clip. In the US, the SMT5600 is offered by AT&T Wireless. Though all stores are now branded as Cingular stores thanks to the merger, those stores which used to be AT&T still stock the phone as do online retailers like Amazon.
